Detailed Rules:
The object of the
competition is to control and submit your opponent.
Ways to win: 1) Causing your opponent to physically or verbally Tapout or quit by using a technique within the guidelines of the rules in each set division. (All competitors must be aware of dangerous techniques and know how to Tapout.) 2) Highest score at end of regulation time period or overtime. 3) Referee Stoppage
1. Hygiene: At weigh-ins all competitors will be checked for communicable diseases, not limited to but including ring-worm, staph, herpes and impetigo
2. Tie Breakers: There will be a one minute overtime in the event of a draw. At the end of the 1 minute overtime if the were no points scored it will immediately turn to sudden death in which the first point scored gets the victory. The stalling rule will be enforced with ZERO tolerance in overtime. The referee will give 2 warnings and you will be deducted -1 point and given the loss if you do not go after the victory.
3. No Stalling: The referee will issue warning for the 1st offense of stalling (i.e. backing out of the guard without engaging, butt scooting, fleeing the ring to avoid takedown/submission attempts). The 2nd offense will result in a 2 point deduction. A 3rd offense will result in a 3 point deduction. A 4th offense will result in a DQ.
4. Leg Locks: Leg Locks are ILLEGAL in all kids, masters, executive, and novice divisions. Straight ankle locks are legal for Beginner. Straight ankle, inside figure four toe holds, straight knee bars and calf slicers are legal for Intermediate. , All leg locks are legal in the Advanced Men’s division. Note: Reaping (crossing you leg across your opponents body while attacking a foot) is illegal in all divisions except Intermediate and advanced adult.
5. Illegal Techniques in all divisions: No strikes, biting, eye gouging (includes chin to eye), head butting, small join manipulation (finger and toe locks), hair pulling, or ear pulling, neck cranks.
6. Slamming: ZERO tolerance on slamming. This is to avoid slamming to escape the guard and various submissions from the guard. A competitor will be immediately disqualified NOTE - Takedowns are not considered slamming, unless intent to injure is determined by the referee.
7. Neck Cranks and Twister: Neck cranks and Twister (wrestling guillotine) are only legal in the advanced division. Intermediate division may use the Twister setup to execute the banana split or calf slicer.
8. Takedowns and control: Any position must be held for a MINUMUM of 3 full seconds before points will be awarded. If you take your opponent down and Mount him you would receive 3 points for the take down AFTER 3 seconds AND then 3 more seconds for the 4 point mount. Therefore you must maintain the position for 3 seconds per set of points. Guard pass points are established when the opponent’s shoulders are flat on the ground and your legs are completely clear of their legs. If you go from standing to a guys back with BOTH his knees on the ground for 3 full seconds you receive 2 points for reversal.
9. Sweeps/Reversals: Reversal of position points are given when one opponent reverses from the bottom to the top position and maintained for a full three seconds. The reversal has to be used from your guard or in the immediate transition of someone passing your guard. For example if your passing my guard and I IMMEDIATELY put you on your back I receive reversal points. Note: Rolling someone over when you are mounted or in side control is an escape not a reversal.
10. No-Gi Attire:, boardshorts, fight shorts, singlets, or Gi pants are required. Rashguards, t-shirts, tank tops, Wrestling shoes, knee pads (non-medal braces), headgear, cups and mouth pieces are optional.
11. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Attire: A clean solid colored uniform (white, blue, or black) is required to compete in the BJJ Division. Uniform Jacket must have a four finger space at cuff and sleeves within 3” of wrist. Pants must be within 3” of ankles.
12. Code of Conduct: We will be enforcing a zero tolerance rule on disrespecting, threatening with physical violence, or verbally abusing referees or staff at any time before, during or after the event. If any spectator, coach or competitor threatens or abuses the referee in any shape or form, they will be escorted out of the building.

Event 3 - Sizing Up to be the Biggest Sub League Event Ever
The excitement is building -- Sub
League Event 3 is sche
duled for May 5. This event is HUGE for athletes
who want to qualify for the Championship Tournament on June 2, because of to the
high quality of competition and the large numbers of participating athletes. It
is pretty safe to say that if you don't compete in at least two of the three
qualifying events, it will be highly unlikely that an athlete will qualify for
the Championship.
Registration OPEN for Event 3
We are now taking registrations for Sub League 07 / Event 3 - Which will be
on Saturday, May 5. Pre-registration will close at 11:59 pm on Tuesday,
May 1. Go
HERE
to register.
Time Table for Event 3
The rolling registration worked fantastically in Event 2. Athletes MUST register
at least
one hour prior to their estimated start time. Due to the expected high
volume of athletes, we will have to really stick to these times. If an athlete
missing a registration deadline, their name will NOT be added to a division. We
will try to get them no-league bonus matches, but there are no guarantees.
Athletes must be in the bullpen area
15 minutes prior to the estimated start time.
| Division | Registration Deadline | Bullpen | Projected Start time |
| Youth | 8:30 am | 9:15am | 9:30 am |
| Teens | 9:30 | 10:15 | 10:30 |
| Women | 10:00 | 10:45 | 11:00 |
| Advanced | 10:30 | 11:15 | 11:30 |
| Novice | 11:00 | 11:45 | 12:00 pm |
| Beginners | 12:00 pm | 12:45 | 1:00 |
| Intermediate | 2:00 | 2:45 | 3:00 |
Commitment to getting folks more matches
We can't control who shows up to
compete. Some divisions will be large, others will be small. Nonetheless, we
believe in the importance of flight time and learning. For all athletes who get
less than three matches, we will do our best to setup extra / bonus matches
(which will not count for athlete's per match averages or the team points), but
they will be great for learning.
We will run four to six rings all day long
Sportsmanship
Our goal is to run a positive, fun, highly competitive tournament. It isn't
surprising that folks get intense and fired up while competing ... and that is
great. But there are limits.
Just a friendly reminder that hard slamming or excessive clubbing of an opponent will result in an automatic disqualification of the match, and possible the tournament depending on the severity of the infraction. Athletes' safety and well-being are priority number one.
Spectator Fee
Spectator admission is $7 if pre-purchased and $10 at the door.
Every youth registration (whether pre-registration or at the door) gets one parent in to the Sub League event for free.
Please talk up event 3 at your respective gyms and come ready to show off your A games! ! ! What will happen? See you there! ! !
If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call 503.350.3926.
Event 2 - Great Grappling!
The second event of the SUB LEAGUE 07 season went off without a hitch - and was full with GREAT GRAPPLING! ! ! The caliber of everyone's game is definitely increasing. It is awesome to watch.
We had 175 competitors, 32 divisions, over 300 matches, 192 submissions, and 200 spectators for the Easter weekend tournament on Saturday, April 7, 2007.
The vibe in the gym was really fantastic. It is so much fun to see the grappling community of the Northwest come together and hangout, compete in a positive environment, and enjoy an afternoon together. It was terrific.

______
The success of Event 1 was overwhelming. We are extremely excited to see the Sub League grow by leaps and bounds. To accommodate the increased size of the event and to give folks a a better overall experience, we are making the following changes:

1. Rolling registration. Projected start times of divisions are hard-wired / concrete projected start times.
For Event 2, athletes will be able to register throughout the day based on their "Project Start Time". Athletes must register and weigh-in at least one hour prior to their projected start time. They need to be in the bullpen fifteen minutes prior to their projected start time.
Youth are starting a little earlier .... so coaches, moms, and dads please note: we are going to open our doors at 7:00am to everyone. However, youth will be giving priority in the line. All youth must be checked-in and weighed in by no later than 8:30 am. Matches will begin at 9:30 am.
As an example on the other end of the event docket, Intermediate athletes don't need to register until 1:30 pm (no later than 2:00 pm). They need to be in the bullpen by 2:45. Their matches won't start any earlier than 3:00 pm -- though their matches could start later than that time, they will absolutely not start earlier than that time. We promise!
| Division | Registration Deadline | Bullpen | Projected Start time |
| Youth | 8:30 am | 9:15am | 9:30 am |

2. We will run four to six rings all day long.
This will help to ensure that we will get through divisions as quickly as possible.
3. Our commitment to the athlete's experience - To give all athletes at least three matches.
We can't control who shows up to compete. Some divisions will be large, others will be small. Nonetheless, we believe in the importance of flight time and learning. For all athletes who get less than three matches, we will do our best to setup extra / bonus matches (which will not count for athlete's per match averages or the team points), but they will be great for learning.
4. A Season Upgrade Package (for those who competed in Event 1) is available for only $95 (Save $25). Pre-registration due by Tuesday, April 3.
For athletes who entered for only Event 1, you can upgrade to a season registration for $95. For those who want to register for just Event 2, the entry fee is $40. All pre-registrations need to be in by 11:59 pm on Tuesday, April 3.
We will have registration at the door for $65.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call (503.350.3926).

Event 1 - A HUGE Success!
The first day of the SUB LEAGUE 07 season was simply great. We had over 230 competitors, 398 matches, 246 submissions, and 350 spectators for the seven hour tournament on Saturday, March 3, 2007. This was far and away the best event in the LEAGUE's history. The competition and sportsmanship was fantastic.

The vibe in the gym was really fantastic. It is so much fun to see the grappling community of the Northwest come together and hangout, compete in a positive environment, and enjoy an afternoon together. It was terrific.

Sub-League 07
begins March 3! ! !

The Submission Wrestling LeagueTM (Sub-League) is the premier no-gi grappling league on the west coast. We are
going into our third season. Last year we had grapplers from Oregon, Washington,
Idaho, Montana, California, and Nevada compete in our events. Here are last
year's numbers:
Tournaments: 4
Total Number of competitors: 265
Largest event: 150
This year is looking to be event bigger and better than last year. We made a lot of changes to help promote better competition and lots of opportunities for the athletes. We know your going to like them.
What is new?
Take a look at what has been added:
- Novice division: athletes with 6 months or
less mat time, no wrestlers
- more weight classes: Youth now have 9 divisions, Teens have 6 divisions,
Adults have 6 divisions.
- More streamlined, easy-to-follow rules for youth and teens divisions
- Team competition / team points based on participation and performance
- Lower entry fee for adults
- The web page is hosing a Northwest Calendar of Grappling and MMA Events,
we hope this becomes a frequently used resource for everyone!
Background
The motivation behind starting the Sport Submission Wrestling LeagueTM (Sub-League) and
www.sportsubmissionwrestling.com, is to grow the sports of submission grappling, Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu, and western wrestling throughout the Northwest.

It is our hope that we will help in promoting a community of grapplers that will grow and flourish as our sport becomes better known to people. We are working to create a consistent venue for good, healthy, positive competition.
The original Submission LeagueTM concept and format was created by
Karl Tanswell and Rosi Sexton in the U.K. "The idea behind the submission league was to
develop a competition which would showcase submission wrestling at its best. We
wanted to move away from point scoring and create an environment where
submissions are everything." Thus, this format doesn't favor the takedown /
control wrestler or the positional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor. Instead, this
type of event favors the athlete that can complete submissions against an
uncooperative opponent in a short, defined amount of time.
Competing in a pool format (where you wrestle all the competitors in your
group), rather then a brackets (where the number of competitors is cut in half
each round), and having a clear point system (no points within a match - simply
submission or draw) allows for Submission League events the following benefits:
1. Athletes get lots of opportunity to compete (usually 3 - 6
matches an event)
2. The is less drama / controversy because there is
less subjective judging during a match - either an athlete get a submission,
gets submitted, or it is a draw. Points don't count within a match.
3. The "league" concept encourages the submission
wrestling community to train and compete over a longer period of time --
promoting a higher, more consistent quality of submission wrestling all the way
around.
4. The format allows an event to move quickly. We have
run two seasons so far moving an average of 150 competitors per event through 3
to 6 matches, all in one day... which compared to any tournament standard is
quick.
We are hopeful that others, once they've experienced the Submission LeagueTM
structure, will be pleased with its emphasis on participation and it quick
format. It should be a lot a grappling for everyone.
